WDFW Beach Season Information
Clam, mussel, and oyster seasons OPEN for harvest May 1 through May 31 only.
WDFW shellfish seasons indicate the specific times of year when harvesting is permitted. Before heading to the beach, please also check the Department of Health (DOH) information below which is related to health of the shellfish and may be updated daily. To harvest on this beach, it must be both during the WDFW approved season and approved by the DOH.
Ala Spit, formerly known as Ben Ure Spit, is a small beach of 1,187 feet of shoreline, located on the east side of Whidbey Island, south of Deception Pass. Butter clams, and cockles are the most abundant species found on this beach. Over the past several years the substrate has shifted from primarily gravel towards more of a mud and sand substrate, leading to a decline of native littleneck clams. The most productive clam habitat is a relatively small area of mixed gravel towards the point. The area inside of the spit and towards the southern end of the beach is primarily mud and sand and is not good clam habitat. You may also find horse clams and eastern softshell clams here.
From Hwy 20, turn east onto Troxell Rd, which is about 1 mile south of Deception Pass State Park. Stay straight on Troxell Rd for 3.7 miles then bear left onto Geck Road. Park along shoulder at the end of the road.
A portable toilet and garbage cans are provided seasonally.
