Executive Summary

LeClerc Creek Wildlife Area is located in Pend Oreille County about 25 miles northwest of the town of Newport. The four land units totaling 614 owned acres were purchased with Pitman-Robertson and State Wildlife funds in 1972. The majority of the area is forested and is managed for a variety of wildlife habitat improvements and public recreation opportunities.

The primary management concerns and public issues identified in the LeClerc Creek Wildlife Area Plan are:

  • Maintain big game populations
  • Improve and maintain fish populations
  • Manage for upland birds
  • Manage for species diversity
  • Protect and restore riparian habitat
  • Protect and manage other species
  • Provide sustainable fish and wildlife related recreation
  • Manage weeds consistent with state and county rules

In 2006, WDFW staff completed the draft Wildlife Area Management Plan and achieved weed management goals outlined in the plan. The fire and timber harvest preparations at Sherman Creek took management time away from LeClerc Creek in 2006. Performance measures for 2007 focus on increasing public awareness in the Grizzly Bear Recovery Area exploring options for elk and waterfowl management, nongame and upland bird habitat management and noxious weed control.
